Choking The Life Out of Coaches

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Stress is choking the life out of our coaches.  In Lincoln Alabama a young high school coach fell over dead.  He had been under tremendous pressure for a long time.  We see college coaches, NFL coaches crumbling under the pressures of coaching in America these days.  These coaches make a ton of money and along with this huge paycheck comes a train load of stress.  Coaches have stress from the administration, the kids with their challenges, the boosters, the alumni and the media every day of their life. They live under a microscope.  These people have been taught how to coach but they haven‘t been taught how to create a stress resilient life and the reality is, chronic stress will kill you and suck the life out of you.  No amount of money can buy you a peaceful life of health and happiness.  Each college and NFL franchise needs to implement a stress training program for the coaches and the players.  What a gift to teach these young athletes how to handle the stresses of their life when they are still young.  This would prevent so much suffering that is sure to happen later in life for these athletes.  These athletes will be stressed by money, status, a short career in sports and the drive to stay in perfect shape and at the top of their game.  They can crumble by the lure of drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex addiction and the list goes on.  Each player and coach should be given the life long gift of learning how to effectively deal with a life of stress.  We have solid research now on sustainable practices that reduce stress in the mind, body and soul.  My plea is that we incorporate these programs into every athletic training program in our country.
