Can Acupuncture Lower Blood Pressure?
UC Irvine researchers have found that acupuncture, performed once or twice weekly for four-to-eight weeks, significantly reduces blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Can Acupuncture Lower Blood Pressure?
In this study, the researchers identified specific acupressure points for high blood pressure patients that trigger neurons in the brain to release chemicals that reduce excitatory responses in the cardiovascular system. This decreases heart activity and the hearts need for oxygen. This also lowers blood pressure and promotes healing for many of cardiac problems, such as myocardial ischemia (insufficient blood flow to the heart) and hypertension.
Acupuncture is increasingly being used as an alternative medical therapy and has been shown to be effective in managing stress, depression and other diseases and conditions. Give this technique a try! If you are afraid of needles, here are some reasons to help you overcome your fears:
- Needle size. The standard size of an acupuncture needle is .25mm, which is thinner than a human hair. You can fit 10 of these needles into a needle of a typical syringe.
- No discomfort. There will be a slight sensation as the needles enter your skin, but you will nothing once the needle is in. Remember, these needles are thinner than human hair.
- Practice visualization. Close your eyes and focus your mind on a relaxing thought or image. Reduce the tension and fears. You won’t even know that you’ve received your treatment until its over!
