Be Your Own Soul Mate

Many people nowadays are using websites, books, and quizzes to find “the one.” However, by nurturing and loving yourself you’ll soon find that you can be your own soul mate.

What’s a soul mate? It’s a person who is connected to you and helps you grow. Though some people may have their doubts, most people do believe in soul mates. In fact, according to a Marist Poll, two-thirds of Americans believe in the idea of two people, soul mates, being destined to be together. While finding that someone special can be wonderful experience, it isn’t the only way to find fulfillment in your life.

Your own soul can be your ultimate mate if you take the time to love yourself. By falling in love with yourself you “become ‘the one’ you’ve been missing.” Experts say that self-love is “a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth.” So in order to find the soul mate within ourselves we have to nourish our body, mind, and soul.

Here are a few Mindful You® tips to help you be your own soul mate:

  1. Nurturing your body. You wouldn’t harshly critique a friend’s or lover’s physical appearance, so why be so critical of your own body? While there may be certain things we would like to change about our look, we should strive to be kind to ourselves. Take the time to appreciate all the beautiful things about your body. Be attentive to your body’s need for a balanced diet, exercise, and regular check-ups.
  2. Nurturing your mind. You would expect your soul mate to be open and honest with you, so why not expect that same free mindset from yourself? Take time to examine and remove your emotional roadblocks like shame and regret for past decisions. They keep you from loving yourself and making emotional connections with others. Adopt a positive and thankful attitude by creating a gratitude journal. And be sure to stimulate your mind with activities and puzzles every day.
  3. Nurturing your soul. To be your own soul mate you need to invest in your inner spirit. Set aside time through out the day for meditation breaks to reconnect with yourself. Make time for your creative outlets (like painting and photography) to nourish your artistic side. Get closer to nature and rejuvenate your spirit by taking walks outside.
