6 Stress-Proof Holiday Tips

The greatest challenge of the holiday season is staying balanced. From gift giving to parties to in-laws to traveling, stress is inextricably woven into the holiday celebration. This holiday season, try our stress-proof holiday tips and keep celebrating cheerfully.

6 Stress-Proof Holiday Tips

Listed below are six stress-proof holiday tips.

  1. Write it down. The brain can get overwhelmed with too much to do and too much information. Fortunately, writing simple lists can help you reduce your stress during the holidays. This will keep you from forgetting items and having to run back to the store.
  2. Create a budget and stick to it. Three out of four Americans overspend during this time of the year. Stay on budget with a gift list. List each person who will get a gift and next to the name write the amount of money you will be spending on their gift. Don’t forget to create another list with other expected holiday expenses so there are no surprises, including additional food, gifts, travel, party clothes, and decorations.
  3. Stress reduced travel. Use meditations and relaxation techniques to limit the stress that comes with unpredictable weather and overcrowded airports.
  4. Make the most of your family time. For many of us, the holidays are the only time of the year to spend time with family members, so be sure to maximize this time by planning ahead. Coordinate schedules, take photographs and practice family rituals. This is a time to make new memories with friends and family.
  5. Avoid depression. The holiday season can make you feel overwhelmed and can possibly lead to depression. You can keep this in check by volunteering or meeting new people within your community. Volunteering can give you a “helper’s high,” and it’s a great opportunity for making new friends.
  6. Food is a gift to be enjoyed and shared. The holidays can sometimes add a few extra inches to your waistline, but don’t stress about it. This can be avoided by eating lighter meals and using portion control.
