Summer Fever at the Office

Have you been feeling antsy at the office lately? Do you find yourself daydreaming more than usual? Is your productivity beginning to suffer? If you answered yes to any of these questions you may be coming down with “summeritis” and it’s highly contagious. Your summer fever can be blamed on the warm weather, childhood memories of summer breaks, or the simple desire for a vacation.

It not only affects your work but the entire work climate in general. A survey conducted by Captivate Network shows that office productivity in the summertime falls by 20 percent and that attendance falls by 19 percent.

Some bosses have offered various solutions to summer fever. Some of the solutions are simple like issuing more “Casual Fridays” or planning office activities. Other bosses allow their employees to telecommute or change their work schedules (for example, four 10 hour work days a week).

Tips for “Summeritis”

If this isn’t an option for you, why not try the simple tips listed below for bringing a little summer fun to the office.

Summer Snacks

When planning your lunch or office snacks consider some fun summertime treats. Pineapples, mangoes, and watermelon are great summer snacks and they’re healthy for you. Is there room in the office’s freezer? Store a Popsicle or another frozen treat for a summer-slump-pick-me-up.

Seasonal Sounds

Relaxing music can help you focus on the task at hand. Nature sounds can be particularly helpful. The next time you find yourself dazing away consider playing a few nature soundtracks, preferably beach or wave sounds to get that summer feeling. You can find some of these tracks on websites like YouTube.

Fresh Air and Sunshine

Tired of being stuck indoors? For your next break why not take a walk outside? When you go out for lunch, consider sitting on the patio at the restaurant. Conduct your next causal meeting in the courtyard. Or simply open up your window to let some fresh air in as you work.

Change Your Routine

Sometimes what we truly need in the summertime is a change of pace and scenery. Consider changing up your office a bit by reorganizing the space or bringing in new accessories. Also, consider changing up your daily routine for a fresh summer start.
