The Moses of Her People
Harriet Tubman is an epic historical figure and our shero. She lead an untold number of slaves to freedom, was a nurse, scout, and spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. She helped free 700 South Carolinian slaves in an armed raid. Harriet led innumerable slaves out of darkness, slavery, and bondage to a life of freedom. They called her “The Moses of her people.” Because just as Moses led his people out of the bondage of slavery in Egypt, Harriet led her people out of the shackles of slavery in the South.
Born a slave, Harriett was viciously beaten by many masters in her childhood. One of her slave owners beat her with a heavy metal instrument. The result of this horrible childhood event caused pain, dizziness, and spells of hypersomnia. These ailments caused crippling pain and suffering that plagued Harriet her entire life. But that did not stop Harriet from her life-long commitment to lead her people out of the hell of slavery. Harriet struggled her entire life to gather enough money to allow her to not only to save slaves from their inhumane bondage but for own needs of food and shelter. She was selfless, passionate, and truly a living saint.
