What is Galentine’s Day?

What is Galentine’s Day? It is a new “holiday” or a  pseudo-holiday that falls on February 13. It is a day for women to celebrate the women in their life.

The history of this pseudo-holiday is that it first started as fiction. Created by Leslie Knope a small town government employee from Parks and Recreation played by Amy Poehler. In a 2010 episode  Leslie, creative and crafty and bursting with kindness for the people she loves, invented a way to do something American culture hadn’t traditionally been too good at doing: celebrating, in an official capacity, the joys of female friendship. As a result, she created Galentine’s Day. Leslie set this day as a festival that would fall, each year, on February 13: Valentine’s Day-eve.

It soon became popular among real-life women, too. Similar to other pseudo-holidays, like Friendsgiving and Festivus, this holiday began from a TV show.  Galentine’s Day celebrates and honors relationships based off of true friendship. Of course, only time will tell if it can transition from a pseudo-holiday to a real holiday, although in case you need a gift, Amazon is already selling Galentine’s Day theme products.
