People all over the U.S. are sending disaster relief aid to help the Texans impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Among the victims, there are countless animals that have been stranded or are in need of help. Reportedly 600,000 animals were “killed or stranded during Hurricane Katrina”—animal welfare organizations and animal lovers are doing their best to ensure that such a tragedy doesn’t happen again.

Evacuating pets is a very important part of the Hurricane Harvey rescue effort. During the Hurricane Katrina disaster, there was no formal evacuation plan for people with pets. It was estimated that 104,000 pets were left behind in the storm. One poll even found that 44 percent of people did not evacuate during Katrina because they didn’t want to leave their pets behind. Many people who did leave their pets behind never saw their beloved animals again. It’s been estimated that 50,000 to 70,000 stranded animals died.

To prevent another Hurricane Katrina-like event, animal organizations and animal lovers have mobilized to help the animals in the Houston area. You can help, too! Listed below are a few organizations you can send money or supplies to.

The SPCA of Texas (The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas)

The SPCA of Texas has been mobilizing since before the storm, taking in over 100 cats from shelters on the coast. They have also set up a temporary animal shelter near a human shelter so evacuated pet owners won’t be too far away from their beloved four-legged family members. Donations are being accepted and locals are being asked to to consider volunteering or fostering pets. They also accept supplies including cat litter, blankets, pet beds, and gift cards for gasoline.

Austin Pets Alive! has transported over 300 animals from shelters on the Texas coast to the safety of their facilities. The shelter is asking for help so they can protect as many animals as possible. You can donate money or goods. Right now, they currently need tarps, cat litter, and martingale collars. They are looking for short-term and long-term volunteers. And they need people to foster animals long term, until the animals are adopted (two to four weeks for dogs and four to six weeks for cats). You can find more information here.

The HSUS Animal Rescue Team has been working with local animal shelters to transport pets and shelter animals out of the affected area. They are asking that people donate to their Disaster Relief Fund. The donated funds will help house the animals, rent rescue vehicles, and reunite pets with their families.
