Prolonged exposure to heat can cause illness and even death. You can experience heat cramps, heat rash, and heat exhaustion outdoors as well as being indoors (areas without proper ventilation or cooling systems).

There are certain conditions that can be very dangerous for your health such as when there are high temperatures and humidity, there is no breeze and when you are exposed to direct sun. Other problems can occur when you are doing heavy physical labor and have a low intake of liquids.

Symptoms of Summer Heat Exhaustion

Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion. Symptoms include dizziness, fainting, headache, weakness, confusion, irritability, thirst, nausea or vomiting. With a heat stroke, you may be confused, collapse and may have seizures also.

8 Tips to Beat the Summer Heat Stress

To prevent heat stress and the dangerous outcomes, try these summer heat tips.

  1. Drink. Drink lots of water, at least one pint of water per hour. Do not drink beverages containing caffeine or alcohol.
  2. Rest. Schedule frequent rest periods and drink water in a shaded area or enter an air-conditioned place for a time.
  3. Clothing. Wear protective clothing that is cool, light-colored and lightweight clothing.
  4. Knowledge. Know the symptoms of heat illnesses
  5. Buddy system. Have a buddy that you regularly check on every hour.
  6. Block the sun. Wear a hat and keep in shade as much as possible to block the sun.
  7. Medications. Check with your doctor to make sure your physical conditions or your medications do not increase your health risk in the heat.
  8. Call someone. If a worker becomes ill, call a supervisor immediately or call 911. Stay with the person until help comes. Keep them in a shady area or move to a cooler place, remove their outer clothing, fan them and apply water and ice onto the person.
