Delicious Foods that Heal Your Injuries

Whether you’ve had surgery or scrapped your knee on the pavement, waiting for your skin to heal requires patience. Luckily, there are some tasty, natural ways to improve the health of your skin and help you heal faster.

Skin Healing Study

So how exactly does your skin heal? Medscape says that the art of healing consists of resurfacing, reconstituting, and restoring. Blood platelets form a clot at the site of the wound and white blood cells start defending the area from bacteria. Blood vessels dilate which causes inflammation. Collagen and capillaries help new skin tissues form. The wound slowly decreases in size until it completely heals.

A tasty treat that can help your skin’s healing process is a banana. Researchers in India conducted an experiment with rats, monitoring how fast their skin healed. They found that the rats that were fed banana pulp healed 27 percent faster and had higher levels of healing proteins in their skin. Bananas are a great boost for your skin because they contain vitamin C, an antioxidant that is needed to form collagen which helps with the repairing process.

Foods that Heal

If you want to include more vitamin C or other healthy nutrients in your diet, but you’re not fond of bananas, there are other foods that you can try. Listed below are a few vitamins for healthy skin.

Vitamin C

Cantaloupe, oranges, grapefruit, and strawberries are reported to have high levels of vitamin C. Eating one medium kiwi or drinking one cup of tomato juice a day is also said to meet your daily need of vitamin C.

Bromelain

If you are looking to reduce swelling and fight possible bacterial infections, you’ll need bromelain in your diet. Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple juice. So, be sure to eat lots of pineapples as you heal.

Bonus: Other Healthy Options. If you aren’t hungry for these delicious foods, consider another approach. You can take vitamins and bromelain capsules, with your doctor’s approval, to help your skin heal faster. Or you can make smoothie combinations for you to drink in the morning. Experiment with different combinations; your taste buds and your skin will thank you.
